An Interior Designer’s Guide to York: The Most Stylish Places to Eat, Shop & Explore
As an interior designer based near York, I often find myself returning to the city for inspiration. It’s a place that effortlessly blends heritage, character and creativity—where historic architecture meets a thriving independent scene.
Whether I’m sourcing ideas for a project or simply enjoying a slower day, York never disappoints. So, if you’re planning your next visit, here are a few of my favourite places to shop, dine and soak up the atmosphere.
Art & Inspiration in York
A visit to Castle Fine Art in St Helen’s Square is always a pleasure. This beautiful gallery space showcases an ever-evolving collection of contemporary art, from limited edition prints to striking original pieces and sculpture.
It’s perfect for gathering inspiration if, like me, you’re drawn to expressive, statement-making interiors.
Nola
Stylish Dining Spots
For an unforgettable evening, Nola is top of my list. Set within a former congregational chapel on Lendal, the interiors are a dream for anyone who appreciates Art Deco design. Think dramatic detailing, ambient lighting and an effortlessly glamorous atmosphere. The cocktails are beautifully crafted, the food is exceptional, and the live jazz nights add something truly special.
Brancusi
Over on Micklegate, Brancusi offers a more relaxed but equally charming experience. This intimate spot serves seasonal small plates in a thoughtfully designed setting—warm, inviting and full of understated style.
The Pearly Cow
For a refined treat, I often return to Pearly Cow. The interiors strike that perfect balance between sleek and sophisticated, and the menu never fails to impress. Any restaurant that serves oysters so well is always going to win me over.
A fabulous pair of chairs ready for upholstery from the French House
Interiors & Antiques Finds
Just beyond the city centre, The French House is a hidden gem. Specialising in antiques sourced directly from France, it’s a beautifully curated space filled with unique, characterful pieces.
It’s exactly the kind of place that reminds you how impactful one special find can be within a home—whether it’s a statement chair, a decorative object or something entirely unexpected.
Exploring York’s Architecture
No visit to York is complete without wandering through the Shambles, walking the historic city walls, and taking in the breathtaking presence of York Minster. The craftsmanship, scale and history are endlessly inspiring—particularly for those of us who appreciate the finer details of design and structure.
York is a constant source of inspiration for my work as an interior designer. Its blend of old and new, refined and relaxed, makes it a truly special place to explore.
If you’re looking for an interior designer in York or the surrounding areas, and want to bring a sense of timeless style into your home, I’d love to hear from you.
